Can Counselling Help?

Most of us have times when we feel unable to cope and need some assistance.  Maybe something has changed for you and you are noticing your sense of well-being is affected? Maybe painful feelings or difficulties from the past, or worry about the future are troubling you? When life throws these things up professional assistance like counselling may be a good way to proceed. From feedback many people have been greatly helped through my counselling, indeed some have said it has been life-changing. However, its worth bearing in mind that counselling research suggests its not always successful, and depends greatly upon how people are able to engage and persist.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a one-to-one purposeful conversation to discuss and then begin to understand and explore worrying thoughts or confusing emotions that may be hampering your enjoyment or participation in life. I counsellor will treat you with respect and offer a relaxed environment in which to feel at ease in. I will work alongside you with personal insight to help you explore and make sense of life.

Your Own Goals

Your chosen goals are very helpful to tailor the sessions and I will help you to achieve them by using a range of counselling skills and a pace to suit you. Our goal will be that you will then feel more equipped to understand and strengthen your sense of self-esteem and therefore feel empowered to move forward with understanding and positivity.

Will I fit into Counselling?

Your own counselling will depend very much on your unique self. Your personality, preferences, beliefs, perceptions, openness, self-awareness, relationship style and motivation will all contribute and add to your counselling experience. Some people prefer structured methods (such as those found in Cognitive or Behavioural Therapy), others may gravitate towards more creative interventions. The most important consideration is that everything will be ‘Ok-ed’ by you.

Counselling Methods

My practice is integrative and includes a range of empirically-researched counselling skills which are tailored to each individual. My approach is drawn from Person-Centred, Narrative, CBT, Psychodynamic; Gestalt and TA therapies, informed by resent developments in neuro-science. I can also offer creative interventions, relaxation and breathing techniques, information leaflets, (and prayer ministry on request) to help you to cope with daily life and move towards resolution.

Session times & prices

My hour-long sessions are held weekly (or at your request) and are booked in advance. Cancellations are 48 hours in advance. Evening sessions may be available on request. First session is £25, terms for further session to be discussed.

How long does a session take?

Counselling (like a work-out schedule), is an ongoing process that takes commitment. The duration of sessions is open-ended and you are free to leave or stop at any time. However the recommended number of sessions very much depends on the depth of the difficulties, an individual’s determination, and the level of investment.
